How to Clean Diamond Jewelry

Household cleaners and tools.

The easiest way to clean diamond jewelry is to soak the diamond in warm water mixed with a common degreasing solution, such as dish soap. Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach or toothpaste, which can corrode precious metals over time. Avoid doing this over a sink so that nothing falls into it. Scrub with a soft-bristled, clean/new toothbrush that is intended only for cleaning diamond jewelry. Focus on cleaning the backs and crevices of your diamond, where oil and dirt are most likely to attract. Rinse thoroughly with warm water until all soap is gone. Pat dry with paper towels and let sit to dry completely if necessary.

Use a steam cleaner.

Steam cleaners use high-pressure steam to remove dirt and grime from diamonds without using harmful chemicals and without damaging the stone's composition or setting. However, it is important to note that not all diamonds are suitable for steam cleaning. Some diamonds with inclusions or cracks may be damaged by the heat and pressure of steam. Therefore, you must consult a professional jeweler before using a steam cleaner on your diamond jewelry.

Use an ultrasonic cleaner (proceed with caution).

Ultrasonic cleaners work by sending sonic micro-vibrations through a liquid (usually water or a mild cleaning solution) to remove dirt and residue that adheres to the surface of the workpiece. While these devices are great for removing accumulated dirt and grime from diamonds, the vibrating fluid they create can also cause the diamond to move and loosen in the clasp. They may then be lost or need to be repaired later. So use ultrasonic cleaners with caution.

How often should I clean my diamond jewelry?

If you wear it every day, we recommend giving your ring a quick cleaning every one to two weeks to restore its shine and minimize the build-up of bacteria. Since diamonds are a tough and resilient precious metal, you can clean them more frequently without worrying about wear and tear from cleaning.

Diamond jewelry maintenance precautions

  • Store jewelry in a jewelry box or dust bag when not being worn.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry while exercising, sweating, or bathing.
  • Jewelry should be removed when applying skin care products or hand cream
  • Do not sleep in your jewelry.
  • Do not soak jewelry in water for a long time.

Diamonds need to be worn regularly, but being careful can go a long way. Regular cleaning can restore luster, and occasional check-ups with your jeweler will ensure your precious diamond lasts forever.
